What does youthful skin look like?
Youthful-looking skin encompasses a wide range of factors, but one big element in our perception of skin age is its tightness. We see grooves, lines, drooping, and loose skin, and connect them with questions of skin health and age. Wrinkles are considered the clearest and most widely recognized sign of aging. In our minds, healthy and youthful-looking skin is synonymous with firmness, smoothness, and tightness.
Tightness is the third among the 3 Ts of facial anti-aging: Texture, Tone, and Tightness.
Over time, skin begins to lose its texture, tone, and tightness. The appearance of aging skin is connected to lower levels of collagen and elastin. These proteins are the essential “building blocks” of youthful-looking skin, the chemical components that give skin its firmness and elasticity and allow it to “bounce back” and hold its shape. In our early twenties, our bodies begin to slow down collagen production, and collagen levels decline at a rate of roughly one percent per year.
Without collagen and elastin actively reviving and strengthening our skin, it becomes more susceptible to pollution, damage, drooping, the buildup of dead cells, and other factors that age our appearance beyond our years. This results in loose skin and static wrinkles.
Some wrinkling is normal for people at any age: the face moves, and fine lines appear and disappear with these muscle movements. These are called dynamic wrinkles, and they commonly occur in areas where these movements take place—think of worry lines on the forehead that come with a furrowed brow, or laugh lines beside the mouth and eyes that accompany smiling and laughter.
But dynamic wrinkles can become more troublesome static wrinkles over time. In contrast to dynamic wrinkles, static wrinkles don’t disappear with muscle movements, contributing to a significantly aged physical appearance. Because the skin has significantly lost the levels collagen and elastin required to give it that natural ability to bounce back and tighten up, wrinkles remain and deepen over time.
Treating static wrinkles is much more difficult than anything in the realm of topical or over-the-counter products. Instead, they are most effectively treated by skin tightening and wrinkle reduction with energy-based devices that boost natural collagen production.
Wrinkle reduction and skin tightening are some of the most popular and fastest growing categories of aesthetic treatments. People understand the relationship between loose skin and looking older, and they’re excited by the opportunity to treat this common sign of premature aging. According to the 2017 American Society for Dermatologic Surgery consumer survey, 57% of aesthetics consumers want a skin tightening treatment with energy-based device. Anti-aging treatments for wrinkle reduction and skin tightening resolve six of the 12 most common aesthetics consumer concerns, and energy-based skin tightening treatments generally boast a satisfaction rating of over 90%.
In other words, it pays to invest in energy-based devices that are capable of advanced non-invasive skin tightening and wrinkle reduction.
