Weight loss continues to be a perennial concern among patients. As many as 86% of consumers are bothered by excess weight on their body, according to a 2018 consumer survey by the American Society for Dermatologic, and that concern has ranked first for six years in a row. In fact, non-invasive body contouring is the fastest-growing area of cosmetic dermatology: according to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, the number of non-invasive fat reduction procedures performed tripled between 2012 to 2017. This growth shows no sign of slowing. The global non-invasive fat reduction market is expected to expand at a rate of over 15% and be valued at $2.5 billion by 2025. Moreover, the male market is growing faster than the female market, which is a rarity in aesthetics. However, this should come as no surprise since a majority of men and women are unsatisfied with their current weight, and would like to achieve a slimmer appearance, with the waist being the top source of concern for a third of all adults.
Laser modalities for non-invasive fat treatments are evolving rapidly and are the focus of much innovation. The historical application of laser in fat reduction involved low-level laser, but newer 1064 nm diode laser technology offers a significant advance over previous technologies such as cryolipolysis, ultrasound, and others.
Diode laser technology works by heating the adipose tissue layer to induce lipolysis and start apoptotic processes. Venus Bliss™, which is exemplary of the latest advances in medical aesthetic lipolysis devices, emits a 1064 nm wavelength through the applicators, which effectively passes through the skin and is absorbed by the adipose tissue layer where it heats the fat cells. The targeted fat cells release stored triglycerides, causing some to shrink and others to destruct completely. Leftover cellular debris is processed out by the body through the lymphatic system.
The treatment is completely non-invasive, which means the use of this laser lipolysis device avoids the complications that often arise with invasive procedures such as liposuction. The procedure takes no more than 30 minutes, is very comfortable, and requires no downtime. A contact cooling system during treatment limits discomfort and prevents damage to the surface of the skin. Treatments can be spread out over multiple sessions for more dramatic results, with 4-6 sessions being the typical range for most patients. Most importantly, patients report treatmentsatisfaction of more than 90%.
In terms of results, one study showed a 24% reduction in fat volume when treating the abdomen and flanks, two stubborn areas for fat retention that are a top priority for patients.
A follow-up study showed an average reduction of 4.31 mm and 2.72 mm in the circumference of the flanks and abdomen respectively, and results were maintained at six months after one treatment.
