1. How Does It Work?

Patients’ health literacy is a significant concern in the medical aesthetics field. It can affect treatment perceptions, risk assessment, informed consent, and safety and efficacy, as well as lead to a host of legal and brand image concerns for your clinic. While you may be well-versed in the technical aspect of the Venus Bliss™ non-invasive lipolysis system, it’s important to be able to explain this treatment technology in simple terms the patient can understand. Be aware of any specific medical aesthetics terminology you use that may leave patients with more questions than answers.  

An example explanation may look something like this: “Venus Bliss™ provides safe, comfortable, non-surgical treatments for targeting unwanted fat around the abdomen and flanks—that is, the sides of your body from the ribs to hips—to help you better achieve your unique body goals. Fat treatments with Venus Bliss™ are powered by diode laser technology. Using up to four applicators that are applied to the treatment area, energy penetrates deep below the skin’s surface where the fat becomes heated and breaks down. The device also offers complementary skin tightening and cellulite reduction treatments using a proprietary combination of energies to boost collagen and elastin fibers—essential components for strengthening the connective tissue that keeps lax skin and cellulite at bay. Technologies used in Venus Bliss™ are all proven to be safe and effective for all skin tones, including even darker complexions.” Where needed, use an example of before-and-after images or use the teach-back method to invite the patient to put key information into their own words to ensure they understand.

2. Is This the Right Fat Treatment for Me?

Proper patient selection is just as important to your prospective patients as it is to your aesthetics clinic. The answer to this question during an initial consultation, then, should be an easy one, if you have done your due diligence to this point to properly vet the patient and have been diligently managing expectations. If the patient is indeed an ideal candidate for Venus Bliss™ non-invasive lipolysis treatments, offer up two to three reasons why you believe this particular treatment technology is the best fit both for their current aesthetic and their goal aesthetic. Demonstrating your rationale can better illustrate your expertise to the patient and allow them to understand the reasoning as well, so they can feel more comfortable in their choice. If this is not the best treatment option, be honest with the patient about their contraindications and offer alternatives that may be more suitable, or let them know what they might be able to do to ensure their circumstances are better suited to this treatment technology. For example, Venus Bliss™ treatments are indicated only for patients with a BMI of 30 or lower and are meant to complement and enhance a healthy, active lifestyle. If your prospective patient has a higher BMI, explain to them why this could affect their treatment outcome and if they seem open to your feedback, provide some easy tips to help them develop habits that will support a lower BMI. Further to this, ensure that you or your staff check in with patients those who may be working to lower their BMI, given a reasonable timeframe, to see if you can support them in any other way. 3. What Can I Expect During Treatment?

Some patients can be highly anxious, particularly in instances where they worry that the treatment may cause excess pain or require downtime. For the many patients, these concerns may be the reason they are seeking a non-invasive lipolysis treatment rather than a surgical procedure. Knowing how to discuss pain management through a sensitive approach to a patient’s mental state as well as respecting that all patients have different perceptions of discomfort or pain while ensuring you make no guarantees (some patients will be more sensitive than others, to be sure) is the key balance to strike when answering this patient question. 4. Is There Anything I Can Do to Improve My Results?

If a patient asks this question, they’re doing some of the work for you, particularly when you may be more used to having to underscore the role patients play in their outcomes rather than the other way around. For patients asking about what they can do to ensure they get the most out of their treatment sessions, it’s worth taking the time to inform them of all the options so they can find what works best for them. Proper pre- and post-treatment care can help to boost and maintain results , making the efforts well worth it. Offer short- and long-term care tips. For Venus Bliss™ treatments in particular, you may recommend that the patient massage the treatment area for five to 10 minutes, one to two times a day following each treatment session. Further, eating plenty of nutritious meals and getting regular exercise can help to maintain results. Finally, stress the importance of sticking to a treatment schedule that not only gives them the opportunity to check in regularly with any questions or concerns they might have, but it allows the treatment to perform at its best when sessions are booked during the recommended intervals.
