Important Industry Trends in Hair Restoration Procedures

There’s never been a better time to offer hair restoration at your clinic. Hair transplantation has become a well-established treatment to offer clients dealing with hair loss. Surgical methods continue to get better, and the latest procedures delivering remarkable, natural-looking results—and more people are taking notice.

The total market for hair restoration treatments has increased 16% since 2016. It is now a $4.9 billion dollar industry; last year, over 700,000 procedures were performed worldwide. As the technology becomes more advanced, so does the ability of clinics to transform this powerful market into sustainable growth.

Why People Seek Hair Restoration

Hair loss is a common problem for both men and women, and hair restoration treatments are an increasingly sought-after remedy to the problem. Historically, androgenetic alopecia, or male baldness, has been the most common motivator for clients to seek them out. Now, however, we’re seeing a rising interest in hair restoration for a wider variety of reasons, including hairline recession, hair loss due to illness, trauma, or pregnancy, and women seeking to restore thinning hair as they age. Additionally, patients cite their dating and professional lives as strong reasons for wanting to improve their hair loss. Because hair plays such an important role in our image and self-esteem, it’s no surprise that hair restoration continues to be popular.

Rising Popularity of Body Hair Transplants

Evolving trends in fashion and beauty for both men and women are always affecting the aesthetic treatments they seek out. Most recently, we’ve seen an increase in clients seeking hair transplants to areas other than the scalp. Some of the popular areas include the eyebrows, for women trying to achieve fuller-looking brows, and facial hair for men who want to have a fuller beard. This interest in hair transplants to specific areas of the face and body is one of the reasons that Follicular Unit Extraction is becoming preferred over Follicular Unit Transplantation.

FUE Now Preferred Over FUT

As medical aesthetic technologies advance, so do hair restoration techniques. Previously the most well-regarded procedure has been Follicular Unit Transplantation, and this does continue to be a good choice for certain situations. However, Follicular Unit Extraction has been growing in popularity steadily because of its superior precision and results.

With FUE, hairs are extracted individually from the donor site, with very little of the surrounding tissue removed. For this reason, FUE is less invasive than FUT, and doesn’t leave a visible, linear scar, a primary concern among patients. Only follicles that have the highest chance of survival are prepped for implantation. For these reasons, FUE restoration treatments deliver high rates of success with treatment outcomes.

At the same time, FUE procedures don’t require stitches, and the tiny extraction sites leave virtually no detectable scars. These sites are easily concealed with longer hair strands nearby and will heal by themselves, typically within three to seven days. Overall, FUE offers short recovery times with natural-looking results that generate high patient satisfaction.
